Theory: Subtraction from three-digit numbers

Task

Subtract numbers:

\(\displaystyle -\)\(\displaystyle 9\)\(\displaystyle 4\)\(\displaystyle 2\)
\(\displaystyle 4\)\(\displaystyle 7\)\(\displaystyle 6\)
 

 

 

Solution

1. From the ones of the number \(\displaystyle 94\underline{2}\) (this is the number \(\displaystyle 2\)) we subtract the ones of the number \(\displaystyle 47\underline{6}\) (this is the number \(\displaystyle 6\)):

\(\displaystyle 2 – 6{\small .}\)

But \(\displaystyle 2\) is less than \(\displaystyle 6\), so we borrow one from the tens of the number \(\displaystyle 9\underline{4}2\) and subtract:

\(\displaystyle 10 + 2 - 6 = 12 - 6 = 6{\small .}\)

2. From the tens of the number \(\displaystyle 9\underline{4}2\) (this is the number \(\displaystyle 4\)) we subtract the tens of the number \(\displaystyle 4\underline{7}6\) (this is the number 7), taking into account that we borrowed one from the the tens in the previous step:

\(\displaystyle (4−1)−7 = 3 - 7{\small .}\)

The number \(\displaystyle 3\) is less than \(\displaystyle 7\), so we take one from the hundreds of \(\displaystyle \underline{9}492\) and subtract:

\(\displaystyle 10 + 3 - 7 = 13 - 7 = 6{\small .}\)

3. From the hundreds of the number \(\displaystyle \underline{9}42\) (this is the number \(\displaystyle 9\)) we subtract the hundreds of the number \(\displaystyle \underline{4}76\) (this is the number \(\displaystyle 4\)), given that we borrowed one from the hundreds of the number \(\displaystyle \underline{9}42\) in the previous step:

\(\displaystyle (9 - 1) - 4= 8 - 4 = 4{\small .}\)
